WSJ: Continental and United to Merge

It looks like there will be another mega airline merger coming up soon. According to a Wall Street Journal piece, Continental Airlines and United Airlines have pretty much finalized their merger talks and will be announcing the deal on Monday. According to reports, the two airlines will operate under the United name and will be headquartered in Chicago, United's current base. Continental's CEO Jeff Smisek will become CEO of the combination.

Two Surprises About Lufthansa's A380

The wait is almost over. Lufthansa is scheduled to receive its first Airbus A380 in May. Over the last couple of months people could vote on lufthansa.com which name they want to give this new, gigantic plane. The idea was: The A380 should have a nickname, like "Jumbo Jet" for the 747. I personally suggested "Mega Jet", "Giga Jet" and "Jet 2.0" and a total of more than 10,000 suggestions were submitted. A few days ago Lufthansa announced it had made a decision. And, in my opinion, they mad a horrible decision. The A380 is now called "Lady Bee"! Awful, isn't it? I am very disappointed by this decision. Why bee??? It doesn't look like a bee. Much more like a whale. Oh well, I really doubt people will start calling the A380 "Lady Bee". I will definitely refuse to do so.

Another surprise was Lufthansa's announcement of the A380's destinations. Initially, LH hinted they would use the "Lady Bee" on its busy route from Frankfurt to New York's JFK airport. Today, however, Germany's largest airline announced it would use the first four A380s it is receiving this year on routes to Tokyo, Beijing and Johannesburg. This is really sad for me to hear. I was planning to take LH's A380 back home to Frankfurt sometime this year, which will not happen now.

All in all, two very disappointing announcements, Lufthansa! I am disappointed, but still love you...

BusinessWeek: Boeing seen posting 1Q profit

I am not surprised to see Boeing posting a Q1 profit. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect profit of 63 cents per share on revenue of $15.29 billion. Boeing has seen continued high demand for its 777 and 787. However, the 787 still hasn't entered service yet and profits could fall if further delays happen. I am sure Airbus's (or rather EADS's) results are not that great.

EADS Jumps Back into U.S. Tanker Deal

It looks like this story will never end: In early 2008, the U.S. Air Force awards a projected $35 billion contract for up to 179 refueling planes to Northrop and EADS. In September 2008, Defense Secretary Robert Gates cancels the contract. In March of this year, EADS officials rule out making a solo bid for the U.S. tanker contract under current terms and timetable. However, EADS today announced they are back in the game and they will compete directly with Boeing for the tanker contract. Awesome! If the Americans are smart, they will make this a fair bidding process. Clearly, EADS has the better product, but it is more expensive to maintain, probably due to its more sophisticated technology. Let the game begin...

IMM: Landing in Melbourne

Nancy also posted this great video of the Qantas A380 landing in Melbourne in slight crosswinds on her block:

IMM: Adventures on the QANTAS A380

My friend and colleague Nancy posted an interesting story about her experience with Qantas' A380 on her recent flight from LAX to Melbourne on her blog "The Informed Makeup Maven". I totally agree with pretty much everything Nancy is writing. The A380 rocks - so smooth and we both love the on-board cameras.

Please read Nancy's story here.

Relief for European Air Traffic?

Looks like Europe will be back on track - aviation-wise - sometime this week. Several European airlines, among them Lufthansa and Air Berlin, consider suing authorities for unnecessary closures of parts of the European airspace. Isn't it insane that a little volcano in Iceland which nobody ever heard of before can cause so much trouble?

Statistical Summary of Commercial Jet Airplane Accidents

Just saw this interesting presentation on commercial jet accidents from 1959 to 2008. I can highly recommend the slides on the 2008 accidents.
